Alfacam was founded in August 1987 by Gabriel Fehervari and Karin Stoop.
Initially, Alfacam provided single camera services for the recording of corporate movies. Alfacam gradually evolved to the use of multicamera systems for the recording of local events and entertainment events such as the Night of the Proms.
Due to the first Gulf War the corporate movie market in Belgium collapsed and Alfacam decided to focus on serial and permanent recordings for broadcasting companies, mainly for the Flemish public broadcasting company BRTN.
Television is being paid directly and indirectly by viewers. Mid-90s the number of television stations increased significantly. As a result the advertising revenues per television channel decreased, i.e. the available budget per channel. This led to price erosion in the recording market. Due to these changed market conditions, Alfacam concentrated itself on special events, where quality, the number and size of the OB vehicles and the newest technology are important decision criteria. Since the mid-90s Alfacam has invested consistently in the newest technologies, several large OB trucks and a large pool of recording equipment.
Alfacam has always been at the forefront with regard to the use of the best available technologies Alfacam was
- the first European company that invested in the digital image format 16:9 (1993);
- the first to switch to the newest superslowmotion technology (1998);
- was the first owner of a very large OB vehicle (OB 7) equipped with 27 cameras (1999);
- the first TV facilities provider to move to the High Definition (HDTV) digital technology (2000);
- the first company to use the newest HD superslomo cameras (2004);
- the first company to record a concert in 3-dimensional HDTV (2007).
